BTS Concert Exposes Major Flaws in Korea’s Concert System

BTS is facing criticism after their recent concert highlighted South Korea’s severe shortage of large-scale concert venues.

The global supergroup started their world tour at Goyang Sports Complex, a decades-old, roofless stadium on Seoul’s outskirts that has struggled financially for years. Despite BTS’s massive popularity, agencies say they have “no other choice” but to use limited venues like this due to a lack of suitable spaces.

Fans from around the world braved rain on April 9 to attend the concert at this 40,000-seat stadium. Unlike the glamorous arenas BTS will visit next year, Goyang Sports Complex is outdated and far from ideal.

Park Ji Hye, the official responsible for leasing the stadium, said agencies “say this is the only option” and “complain they have nowhere else to go.”

The New York Times reported that South Korea’s booming K-Pop scene is held back by a shortage of proper venues. Despite the country’s music industry generating billions, soaring ticket demand, high costs, land shortages, and legal hurdles have stalled new venue construction.

The problem is especially acute in the Seoul metro area, home to 26 million people. Last year, concert ticket sales hit a record $1.2 billion (about 1.6 trillion KRW), a 19% increase from the previous year.

Large venues are also closing or limiting concerts. Jamsil Olympic Main Stadium (70,000 seats) is under renovation until December, and Seoul World Cup Stadium (66,000 seats) has cut back bookings due to complaints about damage to its grass.

A new 28,000-seat stadium is under construction in Seoul, expected to open next year. Until then, smaller venues are used but are insufficient for the concert industry, which typically needs over 30,000 seats to turn a profit.

Fans are feeling the impact. At a recent NCT Wish fan meeting in Seoul, ticket resellers inflated prices because the 11,000-seat venue couldn’t meet demand. One fan paid about ₩400,000 KRW ($271 USD), nearly four times the original price.

Industry experts say global stars have skipped Korea due to this issue. Promoter Yoon noted that Madonna and Adele avoided Korea during their Asia tours in the 2010s because of the lack of large venues. Taylor Swift also performed in Tokyo but not Seoul during her 2024 Asia tour for the same reason.

Ironically, the once-neglected Goyang Sports Complex has become a popular concert spot. After 20 years of limited use, it has hosted global acts like BLACKPINK, Coldplay, Oasis, and Travis Scott in the past two years.

Though the stadium has added pedestrian bridges and shuttle buses, it still has major flaws. Fans complain about long travel times from Seoul. A middle school next door limits sound during rehearsals. During BTS’s April 9 rehearsal, the full sound system couldn’t be used, forcing them to rely on in-ear monitors. That night, BTS performed in heavy rain due to the stadium’s lack of a roof.

BTS had to rehearse using only in-ear monitor volume audible to performers and staff.

The venue shortage worsens as major stadiums renovate or restrict concerts. Booking competition is fierce, ticket prices are soaring, and Korea is losing out on mega concerts.

Legal disputes, funding problems, and bureaucracy have delayed new arena projects, pushing some openings back to 2030. Meanwhile, outdated venues like Goyang Sports Complex remain the default despite travel, sound, and weather challenges.
