Red Velvet returns with mini album ‘Velvet Summer’ after two years and two months
Red Velvet returned as a full group on August 3 with the release of their mini album Velvet Summer at 6 PM KST on major music platforms.
The record is the quartet’s first full-group release in two years and two months, following 2024’s Cosmic.
Velvet Summer contains five songs that explore reggae, bossa nova, acoustic, classical, and dance styles. The title track “Surfin’ Boy” mixes reggae beats, bossa nova guitar lines, and house grooves for a cooler, more mature summer vibe.
Since debuting in 2014 with “Happiness,” the group has been known as one of K-pop’s “summer queens” thanks to hits including “Red Flavor,” “Power Up,” “Umpah Umpah,” and “Queendom.” “Surfin’ Boy” shifts away from those high-energy summer anthems toward the mood of a beach at sunset instead of midday heat.
Seulgi spoke to the Korea Times on August 3 about the song’s sound. She said:
“The moment I heard the demo, I could already hear Red Velvet’s voices in it.”
Seulgi also said the members wanted their growth and maturity to be reflected after spending time on solo activities.
Member Joy wrote the lyrics for both “Surfin’ Boy” and another album track, “Hawaii.” She explained the words aim to hold the warmth of summer memories and the desire to make more with their fans, ReVeluv.

Before the official drop, Red Velvet premiered “Surfin’ Boy” at their Seoul fan concert. Velvet Summer is now available on all major streaming platforms.
